Blue Mountain Coffee: A brief History
Blue Mountain Coffee, is also known as Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, and first appeared in the Republic of Yemen, a Middle-east country. According to a popular legend in this region, it is said to have suddenly started to grow of its own accord in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Others believe that it was first introduced through the plants brought in by a French King in Martinique. The result of this introduction is the booming Jamaican coffee industry that we see today.

Genuine Blue Mountain Coffee
Not all coffee grown in the district is considered to be genuine Blue Mountain coffee, in fact, only the coffee grown and harvested in the parishes of St. Andrew, St. Mary, Portland, and St. Thomas are considered authentic Blue Mountain coffee. Although there are other coffee growers in other parts of the island, only the coffee beans grown in these 4 areas are considered a bona-fide Blue Mountain Coffee.

Additionally, these highly prized coffee beans must be grown between 3,000 feet and 5,500 altitude in order to qualify as true Blue Mountain Coffee. The coffee beans coming from an elevation between 3,000 feet and 1,500 feet are called Jamaica High Mountain Coffee, and those coming from an elevation lower than 1,500 feet elevation are called Jamaica Supreme or Jamaica Low Mountain. Clearly the higher the altitude the coffee is grown the greater the product is deemed to be valued. It is believed that the higher the altitude, the higher the moisture content is of the air, environment and the soil. This all contributes to the high-priced, ultra-premium coffee.

Blue Mountain Coffee Classifications
Today, the Jamaican Coffee industry is able to maintain a high standard of production. The Coffee Industry Regulations Act has approved five different classifications of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. These are: Blue Mountain numbers 1 to 3; Triage; and the Peaberry. All of these qualifications give consideration to the bean screen size and defects, if any.

Blue Mountain Coffee: Its Popularity Today
The popularity of Blue Mountain coffee today is no doubt due to its distinctive taste and aroma. Experts consistently rate it as one of the most highly acclaimed specialty coffees on the market today.  So if you love coffee you must try at least once in your life a genuine Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.
